3 things that happened in Monday’s bi-district round

Canyon pulls away from Monahans

The No. 8-ranked Canyon Eagles got a little more than they intended for against No. 4-seed Monahans, but in the end Canyon was too strong pulling away from the Lobos for a 51-35 victory in the Class 4A bi-district round on Monday night in Brownfield.

Canyon didn’t get off to the best start to open the postseason as the Lobos hung in during the first half trailing 25-22. However, the second half was a different story as the Eagles pushed the lead to 10 by the end of the third and finished the game off with a 16-point win. The Eagles were able to outscore Monahans 26-12 in the third and fourth quarter. Senior leader Kemper Jones led Canyon with 21 points followed by Evan Hughes with 11.

Clarendon opens playoffs in style

The two-time defending UIL Class 2A state champion Clarendon Broncos started their quest for a third straight crown by dismantling Sanford-Fritch 85-36 in the bi-district round on Monday night in Pampa.

Clarendon has now won 15 straight playoff games dating back to 2021. Senior forward and Texas Tech football signee, Jmaury Davis, was a mismatch for the Eagles pouring in 22 points with 12 of those coming in the first quarter. Teammate Lyric Smith chipped in 13.

Monday’s top performers

McLean’s Alex Retana lit up Valley for a career-high and eye-popping 40 points during the Tigers 70-61 win in the Class 1A bi-district round.

It was a family affair for Wellington in a 61-37 Class 2A bi-district win over Booker. Carson Tarver scored a game-high 13 points while his cousins and twin brothers, Bryant Tarver and Braylon Tarver combined for 21. Bryant poured in 11 as Braylon added 10.

Happy’s Kyton Johnson had a big night putting up 17 points to help the Cowboys take down Adrian 68-40 in the Class 1A bi-district round.
