AHS, PD win, Tascosa falls

It was a bitter sweet night for Amarillo ISD boys basketball teams in Tuesday’s opening round of the UIL playoffs.

Amarillo High and Palo Duro both won its Class 5A bidistrict round games, while Tascosa took a shocking overtime loss.

AHS played great defense in a slow paced matchup to down Abilene Wylie, 44-25, at the Rip Griffin Center in Lubbock. Brendan Hausen scored a game-high 18.

Palo Duro was able to run away from Abilene Cooper 59-50 thanks to a big effort from Thaddeus Udoh, who poured in 24 points.

Tascosa, the Co-District 2-6A champions, saw El Paso Franklin knock down a go-ahead bucket with 11 seconds left to fall in a heartbreaking OT finish, 50-49.

Perryton stuns top-seed Canyon

It wasn’t the prettiest of games, but the Perryton Rangers will sure take it. The Rangers, a 4-seed out of District 4-4A, played strong defense, and scored just enough offense to upend District 3-4A champion Canyon, 31-28, in a Class 4A bidistrict matchup in Panhandle. Brayden Klafka was the catalyst in the upset tallying 13 points in the win for Perryton.

Tuesday’s top performers

Pampa’s Chase Landers and Andrews Stevens each racked up 14 points, as the Harvesters shook off a slow start to beat Hereford 56-42.

Ty McBryde of Stratford scored 13 points that helped the Elks in a hard fought 58-56 victory against Panhandle.

Vega’s Carson Kirkland lit up the scoreboard for 19 points against Lockney during a 66-54 bidistrict win.

Groom’s Gunnar Lamb continued his excellent play by pouring in a game-high 28 points that gave the Tigers a commanding 64-42 victory against Fort Elliott.
