AHS avenges loss to Plainview

Amarillo High made an emphatic statement by avenging a loss to district rival Plainview a few weeks ago with a 66-50 win over the Lady Bulldogs on Friday at the AHS Activity Center.

After being stunned by Plainview in a 62-61 overtime loss on Jan. 8, AHS came out focused in Friday’s second meeting opening up the game on a 10-0 run, and never looking back. The Lady Sandies opened the lead to double-digits by the second quarter, and led by as many as 32 points in the second half.

AHS, ranked No. 2 in Class 5A, take over sole possession of District 3-5A at 7-1, and are now

16-2 overall. Plainview drops its second straight game, falling to 15-7, 6-2. Junior forward Briley Barnes had an incredible performance by pouring in a team-high 18 points. Teammates Zeryhia Aokuso added 14, and Rachel Hasse chipped in 13.

Canadian holds off Bushland in OT

The Canadian Lady Cats were able to claim a share of the District 1-3A championship though it wasn’t easy. Canadian had to go to double overtime with rival Bushland, but when the dust settled it was the Lady Cats coming away with a thrilling 58-50 home win on Friday night.

Bushland overcame a seven point deficit with four minutes to go to force overtime. In OT, the Lady Falcons held a 47-44 lead in the final seconds only to see Canadian guard Jasmyn Moreno hit a 3-pointer to tie the game, forcing double overtime. The Lady Cats were then able to pull away in double OT, outscoring Bushland 11-3. Mattie Boyd scored a game-high 20 to lead the No. 5-ranked Lady Cats. Taryn Schultz had 17 for Bushland. Canadian (21-2 overall) clinches a share of the District 1-3A title with a perfect 8-0 mark. Bushland (13-8) falls to 5-3.
