AHS makes statement
The No. 3-ranked Amarillo High Sandies put District 3-5A on notice Tuesday night with an impressive 77-49 rout of Bell Street rival Randall at the Raiders Gym.
After a back-and-forth first quarter with AHS leading 21-17, the Sandies turned it up another level in the second quarter taking off on a 25-7 run for a commanding 46-24 lead. Junior guard Brendan Hausen was flat out on fire in the victory showing off his unlimited range. Shooting from all over the floor, Hausen knocked down six, 3-pointers in the first half to pour in 18 of his game-high 22 points in the first half. Teammate Cade Hornecker followed with 14, while Damonze Woods scored 12 and Owen Boyett chipped in 10.
The Sandies are off to a 2-0 start in district and 12-2 overall. Randall’s Kainan Thomas scored 20 in the loss, as the Raiders fall to 14-2, 1-1.
Bushland takes down Canadian
In an intriguing District 1-3A opener the Bushland Falcons were able to snag a 68-54 double-digit home win against Canadian on Tuesday night.
Bushland improves to 9-4 overall and 1-0 in district play. The Wildcats, a month removed from winning a Class 3A Division II state championship in football, fall to 1-3, 0-1.
Senior guard Nathan Welch lit up the perimeter with 23 points for Bushland. Reagan Cochran scored a team-high 17 points for Canadian.
Tuesday’s top performers
Palo Duro guard Jelani Mohamed scored 25 points that lifted the Dons past rival Caprock, 63-54.
Kemper Jones and Brock Corman of Canyon combined for 49 points in the Eagles 89-51 win against Dumas. Jones poured in 25, Corman followed with 24.
Happy’s Pace Bressler had a game-high 19 for the Cowboys during a 50-28 district win against Adrian.
