Sandies survive huge test from Randall

The second meeting of the Battle of Bell Street Tuesday night turned out significantly different from first contest on Jan. 12, where Amarillo High trumped rival Randall, 77-49.

This time around the No. 2-ranked Sandies had to fight and claw for every bucket erasing a 13-point halftime deficit for a thrilling 54-49 win over a scrappy Raiders team at the AHS Activity Center.

Randall came out firing in the first half handing AHS its biggest deficits of the season, opening a 17-5 first quarter lead, then a 24-11 advantage midway through second quarter. The Sandies went on a 9-0 run to cut the margin to seven by halftime, but it was the second half where coach Jason Pillion’s team showed the will to win. The final two quarters saw both teams go back and forth with seven ties. AHS finally took the lead for good at the 2:55 mark when guard Owen Boyett knocked down at pair of free-throws, giving the Sandies a 47-45 lead. Moments later, center Cade Hornecker completed a 3-point play on a score in the paint then fouled, as AHS went up 50-45 and was able to hold on. Junior guard Brendan Hausen tallied 10 of his team-high 16 points in the second half, as teammate Damonze Woods added 12. Kainan Thomas lifted Randall with 17.

AHS (17-2 overall) moves to 7-0 in District 3-5A taking a two-game lead over Randall (18-3, 5-2) with three games left in the regular season.

Following the contest, Pillion announced to the home crowd that earlier in the year Hausen had surpassed former Sandie Michael Dawn (2012-2015) for most career points in school history. Hausen is currently at 1,344 points.

Clarendon stays hot

It was another night at the office for the No. 2-ranked Clarendon Broncos out of Class 2A. Clarendon dismantled Memphis 87-43 to stay unbeaten in District 2-2A on Tuesday.

The Broncos are playing really well at the moment, improving to 8-0 in district and 16-4 overall. Point guard Lamarcus Penigar went off for a game-high 24 points against the Cyclones. Clarendon has given themselves a chance to earn the outright district crown if they can go to Panhandle (15-4, 7-1) on Friday and beat a very talented Panthers team.

Tuesday’s top performers

The Dumas Duo of Cristian Kelso and Brayden Boggs-Rushing combined for 37 points as the Demons handed Perryton a 68-51 loss. Kelso racked up 19 points in the win, followed by Boggs-Rushings 18.

Lamont Nickelberry and Aiden Allen of Childress both went off for 22 points a piece during the Bobcats 83-43 route of Slaton.

Shamrock’s Sean Wright racked up 17 points that helped the Irish down Wellington 46-28, and pull into a tie with the Skyrockets for the fourth and final playoff spot out of District 2-2A.
